Female Founder Friday with Frankie Taylor

Ever feel like you were born in the wrong era? Being born in 1988, I always felt like I had missed out in the glory days of spandex and Duran Duran (in a non ironic and sincere way of course). Thankfully, for those of you also jonesing to do jumping jacks in leg warmers, your prayers have been answered. Meet Frankie Taylor, founder of GLOW whose aim is to bring fun, retro-inspired fitness experiences to the masses. I sat down with Frankie to chat about about motivation, maintaining a positive attitude, and John Travolta with puppies.

Frankie Taylor | Everybody Glows

JA: When did you have an "a-ha" moment creating GLOW?

FT: It kind of came out of being a freelance instructor myself, and working for different companies, and realising i only ever wanted to use retro music & moves, hence GLOW was born!

JA: Why retro music/theme as opposed to contemporary?

FT: 100% inspired by my mother being a jazz dancer at Pineapple in the 80s, as well as me watching her doing her Jane Fonda workout videos in our living room. I became obsessed with the colour, fashion & music from age 6 onwards!! And the dancing, oh the dancing! John Travolta was also my biggest inspiration as was 80s Janet Jackson & 80s Madonna.

JA: What was the general reception when you first launched?

FT: Yes, really good. People already knew me on the circuit and knew what I was in to. This was just scaling it up to something bigger. People have been so supportive, I couldn’t have done it without the support from the clients!

JA: How do you stay motivated?

FT: By keeping my eye on the prize and remembering that everyone needs to feel like a dancer / mover. Inclusivity / colour & positivity are where it’s at. There is so much dull, negative reinforcement stuff out there in the dance / fitness scene, I wanna change that. I have to.

JA:  What's one piece of advice you would give to someone launching their own business?

FT: Every enquiry, sale, client whatever is equally as important. Whether one is a big opportunity and the other small, it doesn’t matter. Keep your enthusiasm for everything & everyone.

JA: Who do you go to for support?

FT: My friend and business advisor (same person) and my parents & boyfriend.

JA:  Where do you see GLOW in 5 years?

FT: Hopefully a regular exercise slot on TV as well as having our own studio and line of activewear.

JA: If you could have dinner with any 80's pop star, who would it be and why?

FT:  80s Madonna or 80s Janet - i would just wanna get drunk & dance with them all night long.

JA:  Dream day off :)

FT: Watching 80s John Travolta movies in my PJ’s with loads of puppies.

JA: What does wellness mean to you?

FT: Wellness means looking after yourself. Whatever that means to you, can be different for everyone. It shouldn’t be trendy, it shouldn’t be elitist. It should mean doing things that benefit oneself... mentally / physically / emotionally..
